Counterfeit medicines pose a significant threat to public health, with some countries reporting that over 20% of medicines available to the public are counterfeit in some way. The Paper DNA M2 Reader was born out of field studies in international pharmacies, user studies, and interviews, all aimed at giving consumers a tool to assure the authenticity of their medicine.
What sets the Paper DNA M2 Reader apart is its unique authentication solution. It prevents medical fraud by utilizing the inherent micro topography of paper fiber pulp. The authentication label is the codified micro topography of the surface on which it is printed and will not work if duplicated or copied onto any other surface. When placed in a pharmacy environment, customers can verify products by reading the label with the M2 Reader. The device also features a touch screen for additional information.
The design of the M2 Reader is both practical and versatile. It can be mounted on a table stand, a floor stand, or on the wall, making it suitable for various environments. The materials used, including aluminium for stand details and reinforced plastic for the main unit and the corded hand unit, ensure durability and longevity.
The Paper DNA M2 Reader was developed between 2015 and 2016 in Stockholm, Sweden, and Zurich, Switzerland, with technical development taking place in Bangalore, India. The design process involved extensive research in different pharmacy environments, from areas in Asia where counterfeiting is prevalent to more controlled areas in Europe.
The project faced the challenge of translating the understanding of the problem into a unique product in terms of functionality, technology use, and design interpretation. However, the result is a device that not only addresses a significant global issue but does so with a design that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
The Paper DNA M2 Reader's innovative design and significant contribution to pharmaceutical safety did not go unnoticed. In 2017, it was awarded Silver in the A' Security, Safety, and Surveillance Products Design Award, a prestigious accolade given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
